Virtual MoU Exchange between University of Nizwa and University Teknologi PETRONAS on January 21, 2021 at 11 am.
A virtual MoU between the University of Nizwa (UoN) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was held on January 21, 2021, at 11 am hosted by the UTP through the Microsoft Teams platform.
The virtual started with playing the UTP corporate video followed by UoN. The virtual MoU was inaugurated with speeches from the UTP’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, and Prof. Ahmed bin Khalfan Al Rawahi, Chancellor of UoN.
Dr. Arockiasamy, Dean of the College of Economics Management and Information Systems, University of Nizwa, highlighted the benefits from this MoU. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Azmi Bin Mohd Shariff from UTP delivered a presentation on potential research areas for collaboration. The ceremony ended with the UoN’s Chancellor and UTP Vice-Chancellor’s exchange the virtual interactive documents.

Oman GEM National Report 2019-20 Launch Event

The College of Economics, Management and Information Systems, University of Nizwa organized a Webinar to launch the first “Oman Global Entrepreneurship Monitor National Report”, which was held on 20th October 2020. The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) is a networked consortium of national country teams primarily associated with top academic institutions that collect data on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship ecosystems, directly from individual entrepreneurs and through a population survey around the world.
In 2019, Oman for the first time became part of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, represented by a Team of researchers from the College of Economics, Management and Information Systems at the University of Nizwa, Oman.
The Chief Guest for the event is Her Excellency, Halima Al Zari, the Chairperson of the Authority or Small and Medium Enterprises Development of Oman. Prof. Ahmed bin Khalfan Al Rawahi, Honourable Chancellor of the University of Nizwa, released the Oman GEM National Report 2019-2020.
Prof. Aileen Ionesqu Somers, Executive Directors, GEM Consortium and Dr. Abdullah al Shukaili, Executive Director, Entrepreneurship Center at University of Nizwa have provided an overview of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) Consortium and the Oman National Report 2019-2020. Prof. Norizan Bint Kassim, Oman GEM National Research Team member presented the Key findings of the Oman GEM National report 2019-2020.
There was a panel discussion on “Oman Entrepreneurial Research outcomes”. The panel discussion experts were Eng. Ibrahim Al Hosni, Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industries chaired and moderated the session. The other panellists were, Prof. Aileen Somers, Executive Director GEM Consortium, Prof. Alicia Coduras, National Expert Survey (NES) Coordinator for GEM, Dr. Abdullah Al Shukaili, Executive Director, Entrepreneurship Center at University of Nizwa and Prof. Norizan Kassim, Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies and Research at the College of Economics, Management and Information Systems, in the University of Nizwa.
Next, Prof. Alicia Coduras is National Expert Survey (NES) Coordinator for GEM conducted a workshop on “Entrepreneurship Research and how to use GEM data”. Next session was handled by Dr. Swadhin Mondal, Oman GEM Research team member, who presented on “Diagnosing Covid 19 impacts on Entrepreneurship – Exploring policy readiness for recovery”.
Finally, the event has ended with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr. Arockiasamy Soosaimanickam, Dean, College of Economics Management and Information Systems, University of Nizwa.
University of Nizwa organized a Virtual International Seminar 2020 on the theme: “The Global Pandemic: impacts, issues, opportunities in 2020 and beyond”
A two-day Virtual International Seminar (VIS 2020) jointly organized by the College of Economics, Management and Information Systems, University of Nizwa, Oman, University Technology PETRONAS, Malaysia, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and University Nebraska-Lincoln, USA on September 1-2, 2020 through Microsoft Teams platform.
The seminar was conducted in four sessions, each session being hosted by one University. Various researchers and industry professional from Oman, USA, Brazil, Malaysia, and Indonesia presented their talks on various subjects such as Business, Energy, Health and Safety, Education, Banking and Finance and government response to the pandemic etc.
The VIS 2020 was inaugurated with special addresses from Prof. Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, Vice-Chancellor, Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, Malaysia, Prof. Denise Pires Carvalho, President, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Dr. Josh Davis, Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Affairs & Senior International Officer, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA. The Prominent speakers who delivered their talk were Prof. Dr. Mohd Shahir Liew, Dr. Mahzan Haron and Dr. Affendi Isa from Malaysia, Prof. Luis Eduardo Duque Dutra, Prof. Jose Orlando Gomez and Dr. Hosanna Carina Rodriguez from Brazil, Ms. Maegan Stevens-Liska, Ms. Erika Hepburn, Prof. Gary Kebbel and Prof. Michael Rayo from USA, Dr. Sutan Emir Hidayat from Indonesia.
The Speakers from Oman were Prof. Abdulaziz Alkindi, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, University of Nizwa; Ms. Muna Al Darmaki, Ministry of Energy and Minerals; Dr. Firas A H Al-Abduwani, OCCI; Dr. Talal Al-Aulaqi, Oman Economic Association; Dr. Waleed Al Rajhi, Dean, Planning and Quality Management, University of Nizwa, Dr. Mustafa Malik, University of Nizwa and Mr. Shamsudeen, University of Nizwa.
Prof. Abdulaziz highlighted the impacts of Covid 19 on higher education and brought to fore how higher education is transforming in response to the pandemic and the need for higher education institutions to prepare for the future demands of e-learning and blended learning. Ms. Muna and Dr. Talal spoke on the impacts of the pandemic on energy sectors across the world, especially in the Middle East region. Dr. Firas spoke on Oman’s small and medium enterprises sector and highlighted the steps taken by the Oman Government to strengthen the SMEs sector in Oman through the pandemic. Dr. Waleed presented how Oman’s higher education institutions responded to the pandemic and shared the University of Nizwa’s systematic movement from on-campus teaching to emergency remote teaching and then to blended learning.
From the College of Economics Management and Information Systems, University of Nizwa, Dr. Arockiasamy (Dean), Dr. Norizan (Secretariate, Assistant Dean), Dr. Mustafa Malik (Assistant Dean), and Dr. Dulal Miah (HoD of Economics) acted as Moderators of various sessions in the two days Virtua International Seminar 2020.
Dr. Arockiasamy, the Dean College of Economics, Management and Information Systems, and the Co-Chair, VIS 2020 concluding remarks and a vote of thanks at the Valedictory session.
The seminar was attended online by more than 1100 participants from more than 25 countries around the world on both the days.
The University of Nizwa grows its global network in Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM)
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) consortium has brought together a global group of prestigious universities to Miami, Florida to explore the impact and benefits of entrepreneurship research and education. The GEM 2020 Annual Meeting and Report Launch, this year’s four-day event, hosted by GEM and Babson College University in Miami, Florida on 1-4 March. The University of Nizwa, which was represented by the College of Economics, Management, and Information Systems and Entrepreneurship Centre consisted of faculty members, currently has research that links with institutions around the world. As well as providing an opportunity for universities to extend their collaborations with the University of Nizwa within the network.
The GEM Oman (the “National Team”) was established and became a member of GEM in May 2019. The University of Nizwa is the leading and sponsoring institution for this international project for the 2019 cycle by the GEM (lead by Dr. Abdullah AlShukaili, and members including Prof. Norizan Mohd Kassim, Mr. Bader AlSuleimani, Dr. Swadhin Mondal, Dr. Yasmeen Kausar, and Dr. Zunaith Ahmed).
Dr. Abdullah AlShukaili, Prof. Norizan Mohd Kassim, and Dr. Swadhin Mondal attended the GEM 2020 Annual Meeting and Report Launch, hosted by GEM and Babson College University in Miami, Florida on 1-4 March 2020. We are pleased to be able to present a research paper entitled, “Effect of Self-Perceived Cognitive Factors on Entrepreneurship Development Activities: An Empirical Study from Oman Global Entrepreneurship Monitor Data,” in the Research Paper Presentations. This session is moderated by José Ernesto Amorós (GEM Mexico, GEM Chile) and Rodrigo Varela (GEM Colombia).
