The deaf girls of the Foundation Institute and faculty visited Hafsa Bint Omar high school in Nizwa. It was mainly a trip to shed light on sign language awareness and how to face any difficulty. The students shared their experiences and the challenges to overcome in their life. In English to become better, the young deaf/mute pupils need to invest double effort. They explained how the fact of being deaf affected their learning in primary school but did not affect their intelligence and lifelong learning.
It proved to be a good opportunity for instructors to meet and identify the various barriers that exist for deaf and hard of hearing students. They demonstrated knowledge of available resources and addressed the communication barriers teachers need to know to better understand culturally sensitive behaviour within the deaf community. Mrs. Muna, the sign language interpreter at University of Nizwa translated all the discussed topics.
The event was organized by the Foundation Institute, represented by Mrs Latifa Hichri Saidani, the SE instructor and Hafsa high school represented by Mrs. Moufida Al Kindi and the SE teachers, with Mr. Said Albusaidi and Mrs. Faouzia serving as advisors. It was agreed that more exchange activities need to be planned in the future.
