FI Publications and Educational Resources

The Foundation Institute at the University of Nizwa is proud of its accomplishments in textbook and level reader production and the publication of a journal that allows the participation of teachers and students the expression of their literary and/or artistic abilities.

The books for Pre-foundation, Level-1 and Level-2 have been completed and currently in use in the classrooms. For each level, a set of three books has been produced: Student’s Book, Workbook and Teacher’s book. The book for Level-3 has not yet been completed but much progress has been made in its production.

The FI’s books have been carefully developed to address the gap between the students’ level of English on entry level to the Foundation Program, the requirements of the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA) and the nature of commercial textbooks currently available.

While there are many textbooks which deal with the necessary skills, no one book covers all of the outcomes for students lower than intermediate or pre-intermediate level. Achieving coverage frequently leads to lack of consistency, with multiple books required, none of which are used in their entirety. This is expensive for institutions, difficult for teachers and, most importantly, confusing for students.

A further issue is relevance. Even books designed for the Middle East have a limited range of culturally appropriate topics that appeal to young adults and have relevance to their lives and interests. For low-level learners, dealing with language issues and acquisition is difficult enough. For students, having to cope with topics that are remote, or of little relevance to their lives and contexts, makes the task harder than it needs to be.

The FI’s textbooks are proudly Oman-Gulf-Arab-Islamcentric. They actively reach out the students in those contexts rather than expect students to do the reaching. All the books have been trialed to great effect by Omani students and teachers in Nizwa and Ibri. Some revisions and updates have been done and on-going revisions to incorporate teachers and students’ feedback are part of the textbook writing project.

FI Connections is a journal also produced and published by the Foundation Institute with the collaboration of teachers and students. The first issue was published in the Fall 2015 and the FI Connections 6 is the latest issue to be published in the Spring 2019. This journal is a medium to showcase the creative efforts of teachers and students and share them with the greater university community.
